Week 2 Sketch Problem

I found this interesting article regarding MIT, SIMMONS HALL Dormitory design by Steven Holl, from different perspective point of view

Climate Analysis

Climate Analysis for Boston area

The climate Consultant software will gives designer useful data in order for the architect to design a responsible architecture to the climate conditions. This table will gives you monthly weather data average in 1 year. Based on this table the average of the wind mean speed in Boston is 12.5 mph.

Wind rose diagram

Wind wheel diagram(wind rose) can be play to animate the wind direction and can be set month per month. Strong wind usually comes in around November December and January. The avg high is 21 mph, and avg low is 10 mph. Light blue is comfort, while dark blue is cool, while red is hot. And the most humid times usually occurred during the month of June. Avg wind speed during winter time (November-April) is 13.6 mph. Avg wind direction is 232 degrees. For summer, avg wind speed (May-Oct) is 11.3 mph. Avg wind direction is 205 degrees.

The annual range of temperature and relative humidity

The avg. high temperature in Boston is 88 degrees usually around month of July, and the avg low is 8 degrees during winter time. The mean avg per year temperature is 52 degrees.

The avg humidity in boston is 65%, close to the comfort zone ranging in between 70%-75%. Dry bulb and relative humidity is more stable between the month of Jun-Sept.

Wind speed

Avg wind speed during winter time (November-April) is 13.6 mph. Avg wind direction is 232 degrees. For summer, avg wind speed (May-Oct) is 11.3 mph. Avg wind direction is 205 degrees.

Annual sunshine

Based on the sky cover graph, the avg. high is 92%, while the avg. low is 22% and the mean avg is 58%. On the avg. Boston will have 42 % annual sunshine.

Bioclamatic chart

The Psychrometric charts will show us the type of climate conditions in Boston, and based upon the given information, it will helps the designer to decide what needed the most in building design and strategies. High percentage of humidification, the psychrometric assume the indoor air is too dry, although mechanical humidification is not usually needed. But crucial design of natural ventilation are needed.

Continue Assignment 1

I just realize the exercise that we are doing, is similar with the Country House project by Mies Van der Rohe.

To have the blue wall (cross wall) intersect the horizontal wall to have one continuous structure but also the wall to hint what is the different between inside zone and what is the outside zone.

The reason that I have this wall protruding beyond the horizontal wall to suggest another zone boundary without having complete walls to define outside zone.

CS Assignment 1

The primary elements in architecture are:
Point, Line, Plane and Volume.

I am using the definition of point, line, and plane to define different spaces to complete the task.

A point as the prime generator of form indicates a position in space.

A point extended becomes a width properties of length/direction/position.

A line extended becomes a with properties of shape, surface, orientation.
If we are looking from the plan view, I use the columns as a point that gradually transform into a line (small wall) then become a plane (larger wall) and volume (open and close spaces). To demonstrate this, I use the shadow to show the transition (see below diagram)

2 different zones are establish by having open space (zone A), and close space (zone B).

The blue wall is shared between 2 zones, it is my intention mark/suggest transitional wall that is part of 2 zones.

This diagram model to show the gradual transition as the person moving toward the structure

The transition was disrupted by 2 walls that creates an opening that draws the person in.

Once the person enter the structure, a hint of object Trouve and solid walls leading the person to enter the space that holds the Object Trouve.
